The University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University together bring tens of thousands of students into the city, most of them young, most of them here for three or four years. Layer in the offshore energy workforce — often single, often well-paid and often with a schedule that runs in shifts — and you get a dating pool with two very different rhythms. Food and drink

• A meal on or just off Union Street — the range covers everything from Scottish pub food to international restaurants within a few minutes' walk.

Something a bit different

• A trip to Footdee (locally known as Fittie) — the historic fishing village tucked at the mouth of the harbour. It's compact, beautiful and very few people outside Aberdeen know it exists.
• In summer, an evening at the beach when it stays light until 10pm. Aberdeen's northern latitude means long summer evenings that make the esplanade feel almost Scandinavian.
• Visit one of the city's two university campuses for an afternoon of architecture and green spaces — both have real history and neither feels intimidating.
