• Dinner in downtown Vancouver or Uptown Village — the independent restaurant scene here has improved significantly and costs substantially less than Portland's equivalent.
• Cross the Interstate Bridge to Portland for a date evening if you both feel like it — the proximity is a genuine advantage and Portland's restaurant and bar scene is right there. But don't let Vancouver become just a staging point for Portland; the city earns its own date nights.
• A craft brewery in Vancouver — the city has a growing local brewing scene that's unpretentious and relaxed. A taproom is an easy low-stakes first date.

Something different

• Officers Row in the historic reserve — the row of restored 19th-century military officers' quarters is visually striking and makes for an unusual walk with an actual story attached to it.
• Pearson Field Museum for aviation history — a small but genuine museum at the oldest operating airfield in the US. An offbeat date for people who like history and don't mind something a little different.
